Pool Table Moving 101

Moving a pool table means completely disassembling it, moving very heavy components, and reassembling it to a true level at the other end. It is worth understanding what the job involves before deciding whether to take it on.

What the job actually is

A table is not a single piece of furniture. The rails come off, the cloth comes off the slate, and the slate sections lift out individually. Slate is stone: a single section of a three-piece bed is heavy enough to injure someone who lifts it badly. Reassembly is the part that decides whether the table plays properly, because the slate has to be shimmed and leveled and the seams refilled.

Doing it yourself

• Expect to need several strong helpers, carpentry ability, and the right tools.
• Removing and refitting cloth is a skill in itself, and cloth is easily ruined.
• Every part should be catalogued and packed as it comes off, or reassembly becomes guesswork.
• Tipping or twisting a table to fit through a doorway risks the frame, the slate, and whoever is holding it.
